A message from the CTC President:
Summer is almost here and the USTA AdultLeague season is in full swing. Because USTA scheduled the Super Senior 60 League during the sametimeframe as the Adult League, home court availability became a realchallenge. Thanks to our USTACoordinator Jane ChanÕs diligent effort, as well as the cooperation of all ofthe CTC captains and the Sports Center, we are able to accommodate a recordhigh of 23 teams during the months of April, May and June.
We have a very active WomenÕs Interclub atCTC. The ladies have a lot of funplaying social matches against ladies from other local clubs.
The Board is working hard on several newaction itemsthat will be implemented at our club in the next several months. First, we willbe installing shade umbrellas on the courts that are typically used forUSTA matches, courts 2 through 7. After several months of searching and evaluating shade options, keepingthe CTC budget and CSC facility rules in mind, the Board has purchased 6 largeumbrellas. Our goal is to have them installed before the summer heatarrives. Secondly, the CTChomepage will have a new look soon. Our web team, Jeff Labadie and Mike Wilkens are working hard on anall-new websiteand plan to have a beta launch mid-summer. Lastly, we are close to finalizing our plan for installingthe court condition viewing web cam. Our goal is to have it implemented before the end of this year, hopefully in time for rainy season.
I would like to thank the members who sent ussuggestions and feedback throughout the last year. Please keep them coming. This input helps the Board to direct the limited resourceswe have on what is important to our members.

CupertinoTennis Club Membership
Good news! Almost everyone has renewed his or her membership for the2012 tennis season. Now is the time to review and update your onlineinformation. Please update and/orcorrect any errors that may have been made completing the onlineapplication. Some of the thingsyou should review for accuracy are your email address, phone numbers and yourNTRP rating. A frequent error isusing the wrong CSC ID number. This number is printed on your CSC membership card - the one you useeach time you enter the Sports Center. Also, if you use a different name for USTA and CTC, put both names onyour online application., separated by a dash or parenthesis.

In the wake ofa recent theft of a wallet at CSC near the court area, the Board would like toremind everyone to protect your valuables while playing or watchingtennis. We know that CSC and CTCmembers make up a wonderful community, yet theft, often a Òcrime ofopportunityÓ, does happen. DonÕtleave your personal belongings unattended on or near the courts.
PAST.................
Last month, 5 CTC USTA Senior teams made it toplayoffs. What an accomplishment, especially considering the ever-growing competitiveness of the teams in thearea! All 5 teams lost 1-2 in thefirst round playoff but they are all ÒstarsÓ to us. Congratulations!
PRESENT...........
As the Senior season comes to an end, our 19ADULT league teams and 4 SUPER SENIOR league teams are in full swing.
Recently, Mother Nature has not been ascooperative. We experienced quite a few rain-out matches that requiredrescheduling. Here is a reminderof the RAIN-OUT RESCHEDULING PROCEDURE
1. Submit 2 dates to the CSC Manager,Colleen. Colleen will eitherapprove the dates or give you alternative dates.
2. Once you have approved dates from Colleen, contact your opponent within 7 days of the rain-out match and offer those datesto the captain. Your opponent has 3 days to respond or the home captain candecide.
3. Inform Colleen which date you and youropponent have chosen for the make-up match.
We are now experiencing maximum use of the CSCcourts on weeknights and weekends. The tightly packed schedules of USTA leagueplay running back to back, Junior Camps and social play require some disciplineon the part of all CTC teams, especially the need to start all matches ontime. To our Captains and players, please review and adhere to the 5 basic CSC and USTA Local League Area Rules(LLAR) below regarding time management, start time and overtime, in order tominimize problems and maximize the fun!
5 minute warm up
20 seconds between points
90 seconds on changeovers
2 minute break after set #1 and set #2
CSC rule: In the event you split sets, a10-point tiebreak will be played
If a match runs over time, Captains andplayers should follow LLAR Rule 36, excerpted here:
LLAR Rule 36. Starting time
ÒAn individual match is started the momentat which a ball is delivered in service. A team match is started at the moment the first ball of any individualmatch is delivered in service. For matches played in two shifts, the secondscheduled match time for the match shall be one hour and 15 minutes after thefirst scheduled match time. Also see the Order of Play rule.
Clarification from NorCal : Many of ourfacilities host multiple teams, running back to back matches on busyweekends. Inevitably some matcheswill run longer than planned, and the result is that teams following thesedelayed matches have had to wait for the courts. Any team whose match runs over the scheduled time allotmentshould vacate the court(s )for the next team, even if the have not finishedtheir match. Here is the scenario:
Team A has the courts at 1:00. Team B hasthe same courts at 3:00. Team Astarts late (guys), or warms up longer than 5 minutes, or takes multiple verylong, very chatty bathroom breaks (gals), and when Team B arrives at 3:00, TeamA is still playing. Team B shouldbe entitled to start its match at its scheduled time. Team B might be willing and able to give Team A ten orfifteen minutes, if they are close to finishing. That is up to Team B.
If Team A has not finished its match whenTeam B claims the courts, Team A will have to reschedule the balance of theirincomplete match. Team A thenknows the importance of starting on time, not extending warm-ups, and keepingbathroom breaks to a minimum. AndTeam C will appreciate getting their courts at 5:00, as scheduled!Ó
FUTURE.......................
Up next is the Mixed League. Teams, along with team captains, have been identified and approved (see page 4) through the CTC "Declare Intent" process. Captains have until June 3, 2012 to register or withdraw a team. CTCwould like all interested members to have a chance to play on a USTA league, so priority will be given to declared 1st choice members to play on their teamsfirst. If you have any questions, please email ustaleagues@cupertinotennisclub.org for help.
Have fun on the court!
Jane Chan, CTC USTA Coordinator
