March 2011
A message from the President:
As we are moving into daylight saving time, the beginning
of the 2011 USTA Adult League is less than a week away. This year we have 19 CTC adult teams
and once again we are
hitting the upper limit of home court availability
allowed at CSC.
Forming and scheduling the teams for the adult season was
a daunting task,
especially with the overlapping of the Mixed League and
the high number of
rescheduled matches due to rain. Our USTA Coordinator,
Grace Haig, has
done a superb job in tackling this process effectively.
I also would like to thank all the USTA League and
Interclub Captains for
volunteering their time to lead the CTC teams. Their
efforts are a very important part of promoting recreational and social tennis
for the Club.
To all the League and Interclub players, as you know,
it is important to have good team spirit, fine sportsmanship conduct,
and be courteous on and off the courts.
You can reduce your captain's burden by knowing the USTA/NorCal rules
and regulations. You can find the NorCal Local League
Area Regulations online at http://www.norcal.usta.com/Rules/llar_2011/
. You can also help your
captain by ensuring that your 2011 CTC membership and liability wavier form
has been renewed, as it is required by the City of Cupertino. Mike and Ellis Wilkens, our webmasters,
have done an excellent job bringing us online membership registration this
year. This new online process
takes less than 5 minutes to complete. Go to www.cupertinotennisclub.org,
click membership and follow the directions to easily renew and pay your dues.
This year, I would like to emphasize and encourage open
communication between the CTC Board and the members. If you have any questions
or suggestions on how we can improve our Club, please don't hesitate to share
them with us. You can email board@cupertinotennisclub.org, put your suggestion or comments in the
CTC Box at the CSC front lobby outside Colleen's office or just talk to any of
the Board members.
The rainy season will end soon. Have fun playing tennis.
Raymond Yan
President
Our first CTC social , scheduled for Feb 19, had to be
canceled due to the rain. It will
be rescheduled. However, we currently don't know when courts will be available.
We will wait for our USTA chairperson, Grace Haig, and the Adult League
captains to settle all of the match schedules and court assignments for the
spring leagues. When that task is complete, I will reserve courts for a social
and let everyone know the details. It will most likely be some time in
April. Stay tuned.
Eunice Yan
Social Coordinator
There will be no Senior League tennis in the fall of
2011. NorCal has aligned itself with the rest of the country by delaying the
start of the 2012 Senior League until January, 2012.
There are currently 362 members in the Cupertino Tennis
Club (CTC). Of these, 183 are
female, 179 are male, and 42 are new in 2011. Many individuals are expected to join in March in
preparation for the beginning of the USTA Adult season. In 2010 there were 396 members as of
April 1 and 465 members as of the year end.
Remember that you must be a current member of CTC before
playing in a USTA or Interclub match.

We are now half way through the "Mixed" season
and the Mixed team holding a ranking in the top 4 is the Mixed 7.0 (captain
Kevin Ong), ranking #2 in Flight 1.
A number of CTC Mixed teams are so close. As we all know
from the past, it's not over until the last match is played and it will get
more exciting as the season progresses. Good luck to all!!
We faced the toughest time with home match scheduling
this year, with 5 teams having no courts to host their matches on the week of
April 4. Three of the teams have
successfully rescheduled their matches without much difficulty and let's hope
the other two captains will soon come to an agreement. Special thanks to Kiran Kolpe, Fred Tierney, Anne Stevens,
Kevin Ong and Debbie Argabright for working with their opponents even before
the season started. Their cooperation
is much appreciated.
Attention to all captains: RAINOUT RESCHEDULING PROCEDURE:
1) Submit two dates for Colleen. Colleen will either approve or give you
alternate date(s).
2) Give the dates Colleen approves to your opponent.
3) Inform Colleen which date is for the match and which is to cancel.
If you stop at step 2, you are holding both slots! Please
be considerate to your fellow tennis mates.
Adult Leagues:
For the women, 9 teams are ready to go.
1 3.0 team
4 3.5 teams
3 4.0 teams
1 4.5 team
The men's
division line up will be:
1 3.0 team
4 3.5 teams
4 4.0 teams
1 4.5 team
We have finished our team formation process for Super
Senior 65. We have one Women's 3.5
team, one Men's 3.5 team and one M4.0 team.
We would like to strongly encourage all members over 65
to use the CTC signup process to declare your intent to play. This league is growing and it's no
longer a guarantee that the same team can continue year after year. With more members to play Super Senior
65, CTC uses the signup page to determine how many teams are allowed.
We must remember that just because we play our matches
during the day time doesn't mean we have unlimited access to the courts. For example, there are three interclubs
using the daytime courts regularly.
If you are not familiar with the CTC sign up process,
go to the website - http://www.cupertinotennisclub.org
- click on the "Sign Up Process" and follow the directions.
