My Spin on Things
by Bob McCord, President

Do you ever think about how your annual CTC dues are used? If you don’t, then maybe the Board WILL take that trip to Hawaii after all (grin). The Club’s By-laws state that funds will be spent for the benefit of our members and may be spent to promote tennis in the community at large.

You probably know that the Club pays for the balls for all of our USTA home matches. Other expenses include events like the 2007 fall social and the 2008 April social, for which the Club rents court time from the Sports Center, provides balls and buys refreshments for participants. The Club also purchased CTC tennis towels for all members. This year, some money is also being spent in two areas to support tennis in the broader community.

Earlier this year, the Club purchased a portable net and children’s size racquets for third graders at Country Lane Elementary School. These kids are learning to play tennis as part of their recess activities taught by Irene Nishimoto, one of our Club members. Don’t these kids look excited? Do you wish you had started playing tennis this early in life? In the fall, the Club will help support the girl’s tennis team at San Jose High Academy. SJHA is a high school with no budget for tennis. One of our members, Bonnie Ehle, has helped in the past by collecting donated racquets and offering some instruction on a volunteer basis. This year Bonnie will be the team’s head coach. Another Club member, Cosie Sasaki, has volunteered her time to do nutritional training with the girls, as that is also an issue with this team. CTC funds will pay for balls and help defray the cost of required physicals for girls whose families cannot afford them. We will also help pay for T-shirts so the team has a real identity when they play other schools. In addition, Dana Gill, Director of Lifetime Tennis, will donate some of Lifetime Tennis’ teaching pro’s time to help the team get started with good tennis habits. After-school activities are important for kids and it’s great to be able to help a little.

Play well and have fun

A reminder to SUPPORT THE CUPERTINO SUMMER CLASSIC TOURNAMENT SPONSORS!

Each year we receive contributions from local businesses in support of our Summer Classic Tournament. These contributions reduce our tournament expenses and allow us to give back to the community, which we do by contributing to youth tennis. Soon we will be asking for contributions in support of this year’s tournament. Hopefully, many of the sponsors of last year’s tournament will help us again this year. As a reminder, the sponsors of the 2007 Summer Classic are listed at the end ofthis newsletter. Patronizing these sponsors will be a good thing.

While you’re there, take a minute to thank them for supporting the activities of the Cupertino Tennis Club.

Cupertino Tennis takes Palm Desert by Storm

The 15th Annual Palm Desert Senior Cup was held the first week in April. This non-USTA event is a team-oriented tournament for Seniors and Super Seniors (over 65). Over 700 players from teams all over the country participated. This year, three teams made up of CTC members decided to enter and all three did very well.

The RACQUETTES win the Palm Desert Senior Cup Women’s 3.5 Championship by Carol Nakao

On March 29, the “Racquettes” from the Cupertino Tennis Club, headed for the Senior Cup in Palm Desert. Besides playing tennis, we had a great time shopping and enjoying good food and drinks.

This was the third trip to the Senior Cup for many of us. During the first 3 days of the tournament we played 9 teams from different parts of the United States and accumulated enough wins to qualify to play in the finals. The team we played that traveled the greatest distance was from Alaska. We beat a team from Surprise, Arizona (The Surprise Attacks) in the finals on Thursday to retain the 3.5 Division Championship Title.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Senior Cup, please go to the following website: www.pdsctennis.com. You can also contact any of the “Racquettes”.

The Racquettes:
Cindy Fritz, Kathy Manchuk, Satomi Muramatsu, Carol Nakao, Sue Williams (Captain) Laura Worden, Norimi Yamaya.

…….And the MENS Palm Desert Senior Cup 3.5 Division Championship is won by…….. Written by Dick Peattie

A group of senior 65 (CTC) men participated in the Palm Desert Senior Cup on March 31st through April 3rd. We played 10 8-game pro set matches in 3 days. Although a pro set of 8 regular games doesn’t sound too tough, each one took about an hour so we all had plenty of tennis those first three days. Mel had an accident the week before the tournament but he was able to play one match, which he won. Jeri Hickman got tennis elbow, so he's hurting but contributed mightily when he did play. When asked, the rest of the team stepped up and played great!

We made it to the finals, which started on Wednesday morning at 7:00 AM. Hal and Dick lost in a third set tiebreak, Rich and Greg won in a third set tiebreak and we all got to cheer on Victor and Neil as they won in another third set tiebreak, clinching the 3.5 Mens Division Championship.

Everyone had a great time and I encourage all of you seniors to form a team and participate next year.

Men’s 3.5 Division Champions:
Tino Burzio, Neil Grenzebach, Jeri Hickman, Greg Smith, Mel Tuscher, Victor Wong, Hal Zamzow, Rich Hagerty, Dick Peattie (Captain)

OH SO CLOSE …………by Bob Larocca

Bob Larocca entered an 8-player 3.5 Senior team that did very well but came up 1 point short of qualifying for the finals, 246 to 245. The tournament format is a bit unusual. Each team plays three or four matches a day for three days in a round robin. A team match consists of three individual, 8-game pro set, doubles matches. A point is awarded for each game won and each set won. The two teams with the most points in each division at the end of the first three days advance to the finals on the morning of the 4th day.

Senior Men’s 3.5 Team Players:
Marc Argabright, Mark Bailey, Dennis Campbell, Jerry Fox, Cliff Nishimoto, Karl Gong, Ken Yamamoto, Bob Larocca (Captain)

Senior District Playoffs:

Sue Williams’ 3.5 ladies edged the team from Walnut Creek to win the Districts and advance to the NorCal Sectionals to be held May 16th-18th at Clubsport Valley Vista. Great job ladies and good luck at the Sectionals!

Our two men’s teams also did well but were not able to advance. Ron Lee’s 4.0 Seniors took two of three matches but fell to the eventual champions from Oak Park, 2-1. George Bassi’s 3.5 team played the team from St. Mary’s very closely, losing a pair of match tiebreaks. St. Mary’s won all three of their matches to advance.

USTA Leagues:

The Adult and Super Senior 65 seasons have begun. We have 19 teams and 297 people competing at various levels this spring.

Teams are now being formed for the Fifty Mixed and Super Senior 60 leagues. For the Mixed league, it looks like we will have one 6.0 team (Diane Detig captain) and a possible second team, three 7.0 teams (Susan Hollis, Bob McCord and Irene Nishimoto captains) and one 8.0 team (Lynn Stark captain).

Things are a bit foggier on the Super Senior 60 side, but we will likely have two men’s teams and one women’s 7.0 team.

As always, please contact the captains before registering on any team to make sure there is room for you and that the team’s goal and your goals are similar.

Men’s Super Senior 60 Team Needs You!

Leo Levinson has stepped up to captain a SuperSenior60 Men’s team (thanks, Leo!) and he can use a few more players. Please consider joining the team. Email Leo for more information.
