My
Spin on Things
by Bob McCord,
President
The other night I
witnessed a rather unfortunate display of poor sportsmanship. Thankfully,
it wasnt from any of our players. Thats not to say it doesnt
happen but lets be reminded not to let it happen.
Foul language on
the tennis court is not allowed. If we play in a tournament there are
penalties for swearing and other sportsmanship issues. The fact that our
USTA matches have no officials does not change the rule.
Another reminder
of sportsmanship is line calls. Sometimes a bad call might get under your
skin but an occasional one is part of the game. Remember USTAs The
Code. If you arent sure a ball is in, its in. Opponents
get the benefit of the doubt. Lets always be known as a club where
sportsmanship lives.
I wish I had an update
for you on the tennis court lighting but sometimes decisions take extra
time. Money is budgeted this year to upgrade the lighting so hopefully
we will see work get started later this year. Fingers crossed.
Summer is here. Have
a great one.
Play well and have
fun

Local league playoffs start the week of July 11-13 for the Adult teams
and the week of July 14-18 for Super Senior teams. Thanks to ALL the captains
for their hard work during the spring season.
The summer leagues
are in full swing now with the Fifty Mixed and Super Senior 60 teams going
at it. We have 5 teams in the Fifty Mixed league and three Super Senior
60s.
Combo season will
kick off in mid-July. We will be fielding 8 teams in the doubles leagues.
Players wishing to join a team should contact the team captains before
registering.
Over
320 of our members have registered to play on USTA teams thus far this
year. Thats a participation rate of nearly 90%.
Tell your captains
and co-captains how much you appreciate their efforts. Without them, we
wouldnt be able to have nearly as many opportunities to play league
tennis.

to put in a little time and a smiling face.

Hope to see many
of you at the tournament.
IN Memory of
Robert (Bob) Caravalho
1938 2008
Please
join the CTC Board members in expressing our deepest sympathy to Jean
Caravalho on the passing of Bob, her beloved husband, and very special
member of CTC. Bob passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 14th. He will
be remembered by everyone who knew him as a joyful and kind man, a man
quick to give a compliment to his opponents as well as his partners and
teammates. Mike Wilkens wrote, I remember he always had only compliments.
Even when it was more luck that skill, he always made it sound like it
was the opponents good play that got them the point. Grant
Gower, reminiscing about the time that he and Bob played tennis way
back in 1979, before USTA leagues and the Cupertino Sports Center
.when
we were young enough to enjoy the tennis and the busy life available with
tennis friends with this heartfelt description: Bob fought
keenly for every point we contested and was both a generous winner and
a gracious loser. You had to play with or against him to feel the full
passion for tennis that lived just below his quiet demeanor. And
then USTA became a popular venue. John Sperinde offers a perspective as
a friend and USTA captain: I played with Bob on several USTA teams
including my first ever. He was always eager to play, cheerful and a captains
delight. Although he tried his best to win, whether in a league match
or a social game, it seems that mostly he just enjoyed competing in a
friendly way. He made life easy for a captain always on time, not
particular about partners and never complaining about whether he played
in the number 1 or number 2 spot or didnt play enough. Speaking
of winning, Rob Block sent an email to remind us that he and Bob played
3 doubles matches this season and won the final match (in three sets)
in what was perhaps the last organized match of his life.
Voicing the thoughts and experiences of so many CTC members having known
Bob as a friend and tennis partner, an email from Jo An (and Norm) Loop
reads, Bob was one of those people I hit it off with right away.
He always had a great smile, a kind word, and great big hug. He was undoubtedly
the best hugger in the Cupertino Tennis Club. They continue to echo
the sentiments of many CTC members as they offer, Our thoughts
and prayers are with Jean and all of Bobs loved ones. We are blessed
to have had Bob in our lives. He leaves a major void in our hearts and
in the soul of CTC.
