My
Spin on Things
by Bob McCord,
President
You know how civic
projects can tend to go on and on and
. Things feel a
bit that way with the lighting improvement at the Sports Center. Here
is an update. There are two CSC projects that need to be funded. One is
to improve the lighting on the tennis courts. The other is to tear out
the pool on the west side of the parking lot and replace it with a general-purpose
court and restrooms. The city put out an RFP (request for proposal) for
the combined project in hopes of getting more bidders and a lower bid.
Unfortunately, that didnt bring the hoped-for result the
low bid was significantly over budget. Since the RFP was for one big project
and the bids did not estimate separate costs for the two, the city has
now revised the RFP so that the lighting is the main project and the rest
is an optional add-on. New bids are expected by sometime around the end
of November. The good news is that all of the city council members support
the lighting upgrade over the pool work if both cant be done within
the 2008 budget. It sure sounds like we will get better lighting, just
not as quickly as we had hoped.
In our last newsletter,
I asked if there was an interest in having the Club organize a CPR class.
There was just one response. Perhaps thats because there are plenty
of classes already available in the community, including classes through
the Cupertino Adult Education at Quinlan Center. I hope you will consider
learning this valuable skill.
As December approaches
(already??) so does the Clubs annual general membership meeting.
The meeting will be held in the clubhouse at the Cupertino Hills tennis
facility, 22090 Rae Lane, on Sunday, December 7th. We are not able to
reserve courts but its possible that courts will be available so
we could pair up and play starting around 3:00 p.m. The general meeting
will start at 5:30 p.m. Pizza and drinks will be served. It is at this
meeting that next years CTC Board will be elected. Without Board
members there is no tennis club so please, give some thought to helping
out by volunteering for one of the Board positions.
Play well and have
fun

Congratulations to
Jessica Ma and Ed Wong who won this years NorCal Grand Prix 3.5
Mixed Championship. Jessica and Ed started playing together at the Cupertino
Classic Tennis Tournament and won 5 of the next 6 tournaments to qualify
for the Grand Prix Tournament. They won all 3 Grand Prix tournament matches
without dropping a set!
Victor Wongs
Mens 7.0 Super Senior 60 team started the season with 5 straight
losses before reeling off 10 consecutive wins to qualify for the NorCal
Sectionals starting October 10th. His squad won 2 out of 3 matches in
Carmel but lost a close match to Sun City Lincoln, the eventual sectional
winners.
The Combo season
is wrapping up. Anne Neeters 6.5 team and Ron Lees 8.5 team
have already qualified for the post-season. Several teams are close to
qualifying including both mens 7.5 teams, Sue Kims 8.5 team,
and Anne Neeters and Sharada Labadies 7.5 teams. Good luck
to everyone.
The Senior season
has begun. We have 12 teams this year; nearly double the number from last
season. At last count, one hundred seventy three members are registered
on senior teams. Have a great season.
A Cupertino 50 Mixed Adventure
By Irene Nishimoto, Captain
Our Cupertino 50
Mixed team had a very successful season amongst some very tough competition.
For most of the season, the #2, #3, #4, and #5 teams were very, very close
with the standings changing from week to week on those positions. These
teams were Susan Hollis team (also Cupertino), Courtside A, Rinconada
Hills, and our team. The #1 team, which was Courtside B, seemed like it
owned that spot. However, later in the season, things started to change.
The regular season ended with our team surprisingly on top. The playoffs
were very tough and we ended up playing both Courtside teams. Somehow,
with cunning, finesse and sheer determination, we won our division and
it was off to Tahoe.
Tahoe was an adventure!
It was unfortunate that we hit a weekend with questionable weather. At
one point, early weather reports were saying that chains were recommended.
Br-r-r-r-r-r. Luckily, it did not snow (where we were at least), but the
rain hit us late Friday afternoon. All matches on Saturday were postponed
until Sunday. This allowed the ladies to check out the shops in Truckee
and for the guys to take their naps! Sundays matches had to be 8
game pro-sets in order to squeeze all the matches in. Our team came close
to winning our flight, but couldnt quite pull it off. However, we
all had a great time. Good tennis, friendly opponents, and the camaraderie
of our teammates
we were all winners!
An
Email from Lil Ole Bea Greene
I had the pleasure
of sitting with Bea, her daughter Sandra and her granddaughter Jennifer
one Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago. Bea had recently won the Womens
90s Indoor Hardcourt Nationals in Portland, Oregon for the
second time! Her partner this year was Dodo Cheney. Bea shared some wonderful
life (and tennis) stories with me and by the end of our visit I could
certainly see how her love of life and plucky spirit rubs off just a little
bit on everyone she meets. She told me that she really enjoys letting
people know her story and motivating people, young and young at heart.
Go to BeaGreene
to read Bea Greene: A Legend in Her Own Time. Below is an email from Bea
describing her match in Portland. She has kindly agreed to let me share
it with all of you. Enjoy!

AUGUST 25, 2008
TO ALL OF MY TENNIS PLAYING FRIENDS:
On Aug. 24, 2008 I had the pleasure of playing with my 90 year old tennis
friends in Portland, Oregon. We had entered the 90 year old tennis tournament!!
Players consisted of Dodo Cheney 91, Jean Harris 92, Pat Yeomans 92 and
Lil Ole Bea Greene 93!! Dodo and I were partners!!
This is the 3rd time of our meetings and we were one and one in winning!!
To make a long story short ALL of us waddled around on the court and Dodo
and I won the match!! Score was 6-2 first set and a Tie Breaker in the
2nd set 7-6 due to the fact that Lil Ole Bea forgot how to serve
and was serving balls hither and yon!! I finally ended up serving high
in the sky balls and believe it or not they would land in the service
area!!
We always won Dodos sliced service game and for the rest of the
game I played close to the net so that I only had to waddle one time and
return the ball!! Just wanted to let you know that tennis doesnt
stop at age 50, you go on and on until you hit 90!!!
So keep on practicing!!
AS EVER YOUR LIL OLE TENNIS NUT!! LILOLE BEA GREENE
