My Spin on Things
by Bob McCord, President

Early start ratings are out. If you haven’t checked yet, you may want to see if your rating has changed. Congratulations (or condolences) if it has.

I still don’t have much concrete news on the planned improvements to the Sports Center tennis court lighting but the “latest” falls under the category of good news/bad news. The work was put out for bid mid-August and the best guess at this point is that work could start mid-October. The expectation is that work can be done so that some courts will be usable at all times (although there may be some noise and dust). The bad news is we may need to find other courts for USTA play for a couple of months. The decision on just how to implement the improvement plan is up in the air until a contractor is selected. Of course, no matter whether it is USTA or recreational play, court availability will be impacted to some degree until the work is completed. The Sports Center is currently helping us identify potential alternative sites so that we can limit the problems that fewer available courts will cause.

If you haven’t heard, the USTA moved the start of the Mixed League season. Instead of starting in September along with the Senior Leagues, Mixed Leagues will begin play in January. This should help with any court scheduling challenges that stem from the lighting improvement work.

You may have heard about a medical emergency that occurred following one of our recent matches. Thankfully, someone was there who had just finished taking a CPR class and knew what to do. She was a hero for sure. There are some things about the incident that are worth mentioning. First, 911 calls from a cell phone go to a regional center, usually staffed by the Highway Patrol. That may not be a local facility. Time is critical so use a landline at the front desk to get the quickest response. Second, remember that the Sports Center has a defibrillator (on the wall outside the upstairs rest rooms) and the CSC staff members are trained to use it. Third, if you haven’t taken a CPR class, you should give it serious consideration. A small investment of your time could save a life.

If CTC were to organize a CPR class, would you be interested in attending? Send an email to me, Bob McCord, if you are. There would be a fee for the class. If enough members are interested, we will investigate CPR classes in the area.

Summer is nearly over. I hope yours has been an enjoyable one.

Play well and have fun

CTC Ladies Interclub News
by Marilee Adams

The Ladies 2008/2009 Interclub season is starting mid-September. This year, there will be three teams so there will be plenty of opportunity for people at all levels to play. For those of you who have never played Interclub, Interclub is a social/casual league where members from the Cupertino Sports Center play with other clubs in the area. After playing, the group will enjoy lunch with the opponents. If you are interested in playing, please contact the team captain directly or WomensInterclub@Cupertinotennisclub.org.

The 2008 Cupertino Summer NTRP Tennis Classic:
A Smashing Success
By John Sperinde, CTC 2008 Tournament Director

It feels like it was a success even though there were a few little glitches. The weather was a little too warm for comfort on the first Sunday. On one occasion, we ran out of ice in the ice machine and had to make an emergency run to the grocery store. We got a little behind schedule a couple of times when too many insisted on stretching out their pleasure and playing third sets. A very few players complained about the position in their draw. The biggest controversy at the tournament concerned the proper way to cut up oranges. This controversy rages on with no consensus in sight. But, as stated earlier, it does feel like a success with so many smiles and so few frowns.

Congratulations and thanks to all of the players who displayed such great sportsmanship on the courts. We had approximately 250 players in the tournament. Of these, about 40 are members of the Cupertino Tennis Club. Congratulations to CTC members Andrea Imazeki, who was the winner of Women’s 3.5 Singles, Laura Worden and Bob Larocca, the winners in Mixed 3.5 Doubles, April Abreau and Andrea Imazeki, finalists in Women’s 3.5 Doubles, and Hank Wang and Gorti Brahmanandam, finalists in Men’s 3.5 Doubles. More complete results can be seen on the NorCal website or Cupertino Classic 2008 Results.

Thanks to our many sponsors. Patronizing our sponsors would be a great thing. While you’re there, thank them for their support of our tournament.

We are deeply indebted to the tournament staff. From our minimally paid officials to the many volunteers who gave their time and effort for the benefit of CTC, with the possible reward of a slice of watermelon or a bite of banana, we couldn’t do it with out you. So much of our success was due to your enthusiastic and good-natured efforts.

So what do you think? Should we do it again next year?

Thank You

Dear Volunteers,

Thank you for volunteering your time at the CTC Tennis Tournament this year. Without your help, we could not have run the successful event that it was. This year, we had over 250 players in the tournament – up from 220 last year. The tournament, with your help this year, ran smoother and more efficiently that ever. We hope that next year, when the call for volunteers is made, you will be able to help again.

SUPER SENIOR 65 MEN HEADED TO SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nebojsa Avdalovic’s SS65 team will be playing in Alameda September 15 – 17 at the Sectional Championships. The team qualified for the Sectionals by defeating Cupertino Hills in the local league playoffs on July 17th. Neil Grenzebach and Victor Wong took the #1 doubles match while Mel Tuscher and Bill Shein won in the #2 slot to clinch the win that day.

Congratulations to Susan Hollis and her 3.5 Adult Women’s team on their winning the league championship and advancing to the District Championships

FIFTY MIXED

The season is winding down and three teams made it to playoffs. Diane Detig’s 6.0 team started out slowly but won four straight matches to guarantee a spot in the playoffs. In the 7.0’s, both Susan Hollis and Irene Nishimoto led their teams to playoffs. Diane’s and Susan’s teams lost in the 1st round of playoffs; Irene’s team will be playing Courtside on Sunday, September 14th, for the championship title.

Note: Mixed Doubles teams will not start their season until January as NorCal tries to align our season with the rest of USTA.

COMBO DOUBLES

The Combo season has just gotten underway. Last year we had 8 Combo teams; this year we have eleven teams playing! Of that eleven, 4 are at the Women’s 7.5 level.

FALL TEAMS BEING FORMED
The fall season kicks off in September for Senior teams. Need help finding a team? Check the Captains in the Calendar or email the USTA coordinator.

NEW CAPTAINS MEANS MORE TEAMS AND MORE PLAYING TIME

We have had several first time CTC captains this year. That meant we could have smaller rosters and provide people with more chances to play USTA league tennis. Thanks to Debbie Argabright, Simon Brafman, Gorti Brahmanandam, Linda Chen, Brian Frenzel, Susan Hollis, Ken Hughes, Ping Li, Lynne Stark and Shannon Thwaite for taking on this responsibility.

And, of course, we owe lots to our veteran captains who, year after year, provide a solid nucleus around which we form our teams. Thanks goes to Nebojsa Avdalovic, George Bassi, Diane Detig, Robert Gonzales, Sookok Oh, Ron Lee,,Arlene Hanson, Irwin Horowitz, Bill Kahng, Sharada Labadie, Susan Williams, Bob McCord. Irene Nishimoto. Marie Shrodes. John Sperinde. Anne Leung-Stevens,Kathy Wheeler, Victor Wong, and Fred Tierney.
